Academic Writing for ESL Students
Several books have been written in the series Academic Writing Skills with more to follow, but this one is the first of the series. It was written with non English speaking university students in mind.
The eBook has several unique features.
A review of the eBook, Learn English Paragraph Writing, shows that it covers areas such as paragraph organization and paragraph structure. In addition, the author also discusses paragraph format for both written and typed essays or paragraphs..
Besides paragraph format, organisation, and structure, it covers more comprehensively the areas of capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure including transition signals within paragraphs.
The last part of the book details the academic writing process which contains the essential steps to creating a mature and confident English academic paragraph writer. This section is very good for target audience. For example, it clearly defines 5 key steps to developing and writing an academic paragraph. Those being:
- Step 1 – Prewite
- Step 2 – Organise
- Step 3 – Write a first draft
- Step 4 – Peer review and edit
- Step 5 – Write a final copy
Other features of this book, academic writing for ESL students, and others in the series are associated to supporting the English learner outside the classroom. They include a comprehensive “How to”, plus it is written with the non English speaker in mind, therefore, it is easy to understand and use.
Moreover, students can reference and use the book anytime and anywhere though portable electronic devices. Students are able to use this information as a quick reference guide whenever they need it. Their regular English writing classes will be well supplemented by this handbook.
Academic Writing Skills ebooks do not contain any exercises. The books only contain examples and easy to understand explanations based on the classroom leanings of the author and lecturer. The book is only about 50 pages, so it is full of quality detail that is concise and written with non English speakers in mind.
The slight downside of this eBook is the tables. Although adequate, the author would have done better to convert the tables into images for a better user experience.
The academic writing for ESL students’ skills guide is a must have for any non English speaking student who wishes to have good academic writing skills for university entrance. Without a doubt, after reviewing Learn English Paragraph Writing Skills, I can safely say the eBook is packed with relevant information, and I would consider it value for money for your present and future studies.
